Nollywood As Referred To The Nigerian Film Industry Is Not Limited To Filmmaking Alone Because It Also Serves As A Medium Through Which Nigerian Culture And Ethics Are Portrayed To The World

Being the second-largest movie industry globally in terms of output, as about 2,500 movies are produced annually, which surpasses Hollywood.

Nollywood’s creation started in the early 1960s when the first Nollywood movies were being created by historical filmmakers like Hubert Ogunde, Jab Adu, Ola Balogun, Eddie Ugboma and Moses Olayia (“history”) who are considered the first generation of Nigerian filmmakers.

While in the early 1990s, filmmakers like Teco Benson took the lead to become the pioneer of action movies in Nollywood, which also brought Nollywood to the limelight of the international audience.

In as much as Nollywood cannot be compared to Hollywood in terms of movie qualities, as Hollywood is older than Nollywood and thus, is more advanced technically and well financially established.

Which are more reasons Hollywood garners more audience than Nollywood in the global Cinema festivals.

While Nollywood movies have a large following in Africa and among Africans in the diaspora, but still staggers when it comes to attracting non-African descent audience to the cinema in non-English speaking countries like Germany, France, Italy and Spain, unlike in the UK and US where Nollywood movies are common.

Grace Evaly a passionate Nollywood actress based in Hamburg Germany, deeply concerned about the ineptitude turn up of audience for the Nollywood movies in the German Cinemas rose to fill the devoid gap, by founding Nollywood Germany.

A platform that brings Nollywood to Germany, with the intent of getting people excited about Nollywood movies across Germany.

The organisation has been at the forefront of taking Nollywood closer to a wider audience through recurring events such as Cinema Evenings, Premieres and Film Festivals.

These events welcome everyone to get to know Nollywood and its real-life stories.

Nollywood Germany is embedded in the vision of introducing Nigerian movies into the existing programs of the biggest cinemas in Germany.

Which would impart the knowledge of African culture to non-African descent cinema-goers that are curious to know about the African cultures and ethics.

The organisation, as well as its activities, contribute to international understanding between both cultures.

These enhance a cordial relationship between both parties, by exhibiting movies that encourage intercultural exchange and receptive to discussions.

Nollywood Germany promotes cooperation for filmmakers from Nigeria and Germany and encourages them to network with each other and realize joint projects. A space for professionals of the industry where creative minds meet to exchange ideas.
